PostgreSQL Usergroup NL meetup 11 april

An Evening With Bruce

PostgteSQL Usergroup NL meetup an evening with Bruce on April 11th

In 2020 the Covid virus was responsible for the cancellation of a special meetup featuring Bruce Momjian, co-founder of PostgreSQL, longtime member of the PostgreSQL core team and VP of EnterpriseDB. Therefore we are extra happy to be able to invite you on April 11th 2023 to a meetup with Bruce!

Derk van Veen of Adyen will start the evening with a presentation on the lessons learned of Adyen about Partitioning

After a short break, Bruce will talk about “Postgres” Database, Containers, and the Cloud

REQUEST!
After the presentation of Bruce, YOU have the opportunity to ask Bruce everything you always wanted to know about PostgreSQL during a 'fireside chat'. In this Q&A session Bruce will answer questions from the members of the Postgres Usergroup.

We ask you to send you questions for Bruce before april 5th in the meetup group portal on meetup.com or to gerard@optimadata.nl

We are very grateful to Adyen for, again, hosting the Meetup. We look forward to a great evening!

Bruce Momjian - “Postgres” Database, Containers, and the Cloud

Containers and the cloud are all the rage as companies seek new efficiencies and flexibility. While they are very popular, database use of these facilities is still growing. This session explores their benefit for database deployments.

About Bruce

Bruce Momjian is co-founder and core team member of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, and has worked on PostgreSQL since 1996. He has been employed by EnterpriseDB since 2006. Bruce has spoken at many international open-source conferences and is the author of PostgreSQL: Introduction and Concepts, published by Addison-Wesley. Prior to his involvement with PostgreSQL, Bruce worked as a consultant, developing custom database applications for some of the world's largest law firms. As an academic, Bruce holds a Masters in Education, was a high school computer science teacher, and lectures internationally at universities.

Derk van Veen - Partitioning

Derk van Veen - AdyenAt Adyen we have invested heavily and built upon the Postgres database engine, generally this has worked  very well for us.

Partitioning a table starts really easy. In just a few commands your table transforms into a partitioned table. But when you are trying to do maintenance under heavy load it turns out no so easy.

In this session I go over all our lessons learned, the pro's and con's of default partitions and I show how and when we cheat with our catalog to prevent (b)locking other transactions.

I will also cover how partitioning influences performance in both good and really painful ways.

The aim of the talk is to share best practice and lessons learnt for managing Postgres from Adyen. We want to share this with the broader Postgres community, as we think our DBAs will find this useful and also we're looking for feedback and further possible enhancements.
