‘You get the puzzles here that other organizations have lost track of’
Tino Dudink, Senior Database Consultant at OptimaData, has been working passionately in the database world for 25 years. His love for technology started during his studies in economics, where an assignment about databases landed him his first job. Since then, puzzling, connecting systems and unlocking data have been the common thread in his career. In this blog, Tino tells what motivates him and what dreams he has for the future.
I wrote a blog before that I still like all that struggling through the bowels of the world of databases after 25 years. What is it that fascinates me so much? The combination of puzzling, bringing people and systems together, and unlocking data. For me it’s something magical, a bit like making music. I studied economics, and many people find it surprising that I ended up in IT. But in the end it has become a fine combination of concrete application and technology.
Databases have been my common thread from day one. During my economics studies, I chose computer science, with databases as an important elective. I made a case study for an assignment, and my professor was so enthusiastic that he said: “Tino, we want to use your case as a practical. Work it out further.” That was my very first assignment, very cool! My professor thought I had talent and introduced me to a company where he was a supervisory director. That became my first job and that’s how my career in the database world started.
In the beginning, I focused purely on system and application development, but over time I made the switch to business and data analysis. I did that for over ten years. During that period, I worked a lot on large projects with a nice mix of development and management components. At the end of the 2000s, during the financial crisis, I was seconded to a large financial service provider for a longer period of time. That turned out to be a bull’s eye. I liked it so much that I eventually became a permanent employee. There I worked on policy from the line organization and suddenly I was on the other side of the table. An experience that enriched my view of the field.
Since then, the database profession has really become my super specialty. It is the core of my work. But we all know, there is nothing more changeable than ‘IT’. With the rise of cloud technology, you see the focus shifting from databases to data. At OptimaData, we move with it. Where you used to be able to operate as a DBA in your own ‘kingdom’, that is now really a thing of the past. You also need to understand platforms, cloud environments and the broader architecture. Lifelong learning? That’s just the standard these days. But if you ask me, that only makes the profession more interesting.

In 2019 I made the switch to OptimaData. What I like so much here is the cooperation and interaction with colleagues. As a self-employed person, you are often on your own with a customer. Of course there is also interaction there, but here it is just much bigger. You work together in a team, there is a daily stand-up, a monthly managed service meeting and you can always spar with someone. That really creates a dynamic that you often miss as a self-employed person.
The support of management is also important. Edco and Gerard have established a strong brand and ensure that we have a strong position in the market as a team. This is especially indispensable for larger customers. As a one-man business, you are often less strong. As OptimaData, we have built a solid reputation over the past eight years. We are known for our knowledge and expertise and we actively propagate that.
In recent years, I have seen my role shift. In migration processes, I work more and more as a project architect. I help write designs, plans and scripts. It feels a bit like I’m the director. Of course, I am still at the controls, but my experience helps me to look further and move with new developments. At OptimaData, we are a bit of the eyes and ears of our clients when it comes to databases. They often lack the specific knowledge that is needed, that’s what they have us for.
In my spare time, I like to watch Ajax, my favorite football club. The last seasons were not always to write home about, but fortunately there is now something to laugh about again. I also walk my dog and go out. I also like to watch thrillers, detectives and spy series. Still that puzzling that I love so much.
