As a Database Reliability Engineer, you must work with precision and focus. That same precision is required in Japanese swordsmanship. Harry Splinter, Multiplatform Database Reliability Engineer at OptimaData, brings both disciplines together. In this blog, he shares insights about his work as a database specialist, his choice to join OptimaData, and his unique hobbies.
As a Multiplatform Database Reliability Engineer, my focus is on Sybase|SAP ASE. At the moment, I am working on a project at a financial institution. After a major database upgrade, we are making the system high available—a crucial step for the continuity of their services.
A few years ago, I was looking for a company where I could further develop my database skills because my work at the time was limited to everyday tasks. Through my network, I already knew several employees at OptimaData. From Thomas, I learned that I could truly thrive in terms of development at OptimaData. That appealed to me, so I decided to have a chat. I made the switch at the end of 2022, and I haven’t regretted it for a single day. It was a real bull’s-eye!
Here, I work alongside Database Administrators who speak the same language and have years of experience. We all share the same passion for the field. While you might typically deal with two or three databases, here we work with a wide range of systems—from open-source solutions like PostgreSQL and MySQL to proprietary systems such as Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase|SAP ASE. We never shy away from a significant database challenge. Take, for example, the Galera clusters for high availability or the cloud-native implementations of PostgreSQL—each of these requires specialized knowledge. That keeps the work interesting every day. And we all share the same drive: creating optimal database environments for our clients. This ensures that we continuously develop our expertise. And the best part is, we do it without any fuss. Just keep it simple, because being a DBA is already crazy enough.
I carry that focus and dedication into my other passion: Japanese martial arts. Two to three times a week, I practice Kendo and Iaido, two forms of Japanese swordsmanship. They require complete concentration—every distraction can give your opponent an opening. It helps me completely disconnect from work. As a secretary and second-dan practitioner, I am also actively involved with Kendo Dojo Suirankan Meppel.
Besides swordsmanship, I have another Japanese interest: Bonsai. The precision and patience needed to shape a Bonsai tree surprisingly align with database management—the details make all the difference. In my free time, I also maintain websites for non-profit organizations that catch my interest.
When it comes to my future, I can be brief: in five to ten years, I hope to say farewell to a thriving company. Not that I’m working on that right now, but time flies when you’re enjoying yourself. Before I know it, the moment will arrive. For now, though, I’m focused on expanding my knowledge and taking on challenging assignments.
